Step-by-step success:

Begin with an interesting vase or basket. Look around the house for something unique or pick some up at flea markets or yard sales.

Clean your container thoroughly to remove bacteria.

Fill container with water and add a floral preservative (available from your florist).

Make a cellophane tape grid on the mouth of a glass container; use "oasis tape" (available at your florist) on a ceramic container or a basket.

Choose flowers (you’ll need around 3-4 large "centerpiece" flowers plus any secondary blooms) and greens that have appealing colors and shapes.

Using sharp scissors or a knife, cut greens short and close to vase to form a base.

Measure flowers against the container, cut and insert into vase.

Add decorative ribbons, seasonal fruit or candles if you’d like.

Tips:

  • Keep table arrangements short enough to see over.
  • Arrange smaller blooms in groups so they are easier to handle and make a more distinctive impression.
  • Keep your flowers in a cool location.
  • Check water level daily and replenish as necessary.
  • Don’t worry about perfect symmetry. As long as it looks pleasing to you, it’s fine.
